Clinical focus

The Department of Community Health Nursing  offers preventive services, curative care, rehabilitative care, and patient referral services.  Students are trained to become competent public health nursing professionals.  The  training emphasizes developing leadership skills, leadership training, critical thinking, effective communication, program planning, cultural sensitivity and financial skills.  Students clinical practice includes evaluation of patient’s health status and disease management while observing patients under specific supervision.

Surveys and enumerations occur regularly to help establish effective health programs. Health programs include screening for communicable diseases and non-communicable conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Hypertension (HT), cerebrovascular accidents, Cardiovascular diseases, Cervical Cancer, Tuberculosis (TB), Filaria, Dengue fever, and HIV/AIDS. Under faculty supervision students also carry out regular home visits to deliver complete healthcare service to patients.

Community Health Nursing encompasses family-centered framework that includes Assessment , planning, implementation and evaluation.  This promotes individuals to adopt healthy behaviors including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and counseling sessions for self-care together with appropriate treatment of minor ailments.  The department is involved in surveillance, coordination of patient referrals and follow-ups for critical as well as acute illnesses.

In partnership with community-based organizations,  the department launches health-improvement initiatives prioritizing  safe living conditions, secure food supplies,  road safety advocacy, sanitary improvements, and social bonding efforts.

Nursing students are part of national health initiatives such as maternal and child healthcare,    immunization programs and disease prevention activities.

Health Camps:

The activities in the community include COVID-19 vaccination, Pulse Polio Immunization,  Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, Chief Minister’s Health Camps, camps by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Sri Ramachandra Hospital’s multispecialty health camps.

School Health Programs:

Educational health programs for private and government schools are conducted in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine.
